When I was in Japan, I encountered a regularly reproduced graphic design for water, used across printed textures and images. In Japan it is very familiar as a field of water, but I had an encounter with it in one of its graphic forms that really conflated it with the wifi symbol. I’ve been interested in the materiality of the seemingly immaterial infrastructures of everyday life, and also with mass communication — I have another project about empty speech — a signifier of talking or communicating, without anything being said — is all of our communication for dialogue, or is it to perform some other role?
