House

I made this hand knitted rendition of my mother’s house after moving away from home, which was when I became able to look objectively at where I grew up for the first time. The house is a personal centre of gravity, so familiar that I hardly notice it, heavy with memories. This conflicted with the alienation and disconnectedness I felt when I moved away. Having now returned to my mother’s house to live during the Covid-19 lockdown, the work has a new relevance. The house is a place of safety and stability in a time of crisis, but also a place of loneliness, isolation, and restriction.
