Notes on saint’s hair…

During the period of lockdown I have been making drawings with the limited means available at home. These works are a focus on a very ordinary thing within iconic representations. As a method of working I had wanted them to be slow to build-up, before becoming completed. They are made using drawing pens on paper, some with added colour: inks, or oil crayons. The text that has informed my paintings over the past four years is Elegy 1 & 2, of the Duino Elegies by Rainer Maria Rilke. Completed at the end of WW1, through poetry they discursively express: power, the super-human, the numinous, and the human frailty of hope.
