The lot marked out for me is my delight

Graphite on paper, 14.8cm x 21cm

This drawing, part of a series on the Life of the Virgin, is set in a coppiced wood in Kent near where I used to live. It is late winter and the leafless trees are more like prison bars. Jesus has fallen painfully under the weight of the cross. His mother tries ineffectually to help him lift it but what really helps him is her presence there. At this time, when so many of us are missing our families, this image offers a particular poignancy.
