Via Dolorosa

Lithograph on paper with chine colle, 40cm x 49cm.

The Via Dolorosa (Latin for Sorrowful Way, but often translated as Way of Suffering) is the route that Jesus walked on the way to his crucifixion outside Jerusalem, now a celebrated place of Christian pilgrimage. This piece is a lamentation for persecuted Christians everywhere. The angel turns away, too overcome by grief to contemplate Christ’s suffering directly, and the image is intended to challenge the ways in which we ourselves often turn away, reluctant to confront the suffering of our fellow human beings. In this work I am reflecting on my Catholic Christian identity andexpressing solidarity with all Christians, who are members of the most persecuted religion worldwide.
